Our Legacy

The New Jersey Society of Licensed Tree Experts (SLTE) has deep roots in New Jersey’s tree care history, dating back to 1941. It all started with the passing of the Certified Tree Expert Bill in 1940, which created the first official certification for tree care professionals in the state. Fifteen dedicated individuals became the first to pass the exam administered by the New Jersey Department of Conservation and Development. On July 23, 1941, these pioneers came together to form the Society, setting the stage for an organization that would shape the future of arboriculture in New Jersey.

For over 80 years, SLTE has been more than just a professional association—it’s a symbol of passion, dedication, and growth. With nearly 130 members and counting, our society represents the best in the tree care industry. We’re driven by a shared commitment to advancing the science of arboriculture, fostering professionalism, and ensuring the public understands the important role tree experts play in our environment.

From regular training sessions designed to prepare aspiring Licensed Tree Experts (LTEs) for their certification exams, to continuing education opportunities for seasoned professionals, we are here to help our members grow and succeed.
